Sony has unleashed new mini-camcorder named “The Bloggie MHS-PM5”. It is slim and light weighted and compact camcorder. It records videos in good quality. You can also capture still shot at 5MP. It has rotating lens. The performance of this device is not so bad either. Sharing of pictures and videos are bit clumsy here. Certainly, it is capable of recording 1080p HD videos. Overall, it is nice camcorder which suits your budget. It is available at a price range of $149 to $169.
The PM5 has candy bar design and maintains slim profile. It is pretty lighter in hand. It is available in white, blue, dark purple and pink colors. The major difference over its predecessor is that it has got rotating lens. The lens can rotate up to 270 degrees. The LCD is pretty decent that offers wide viewing angles and better sun legibility. The LCD is sufficiently bright.
There is a shutter release to take a snap at 5 megapixel resolution and below there is a video recording button. They are followed by a zoom rocker and a power button. You will get zoom up to just 4x and it doesn’t work while shooting at high resolution. Below LCD, you will find a 5-way joystick flanked by menu buttons and playback. We didn’t have any difficult in handling them.
The Slider opens to a USB connector along with AV connector on the right side. Memory card slot and detachable Li-Ion battery are hidden under door present on the left side. The “memory card slot” can accommodate both SD/SDHC and “Memory Stick Pro Duo” cards. The battery gets charged inside the camcorder through USB.
The shooting features of the PM5 include four video resolutions (1920×1080, 640×480, 1280×720, and 1280×720 progressive), face detection, electronic image stabilization, self-timer and fluorescent-light flicker reduction. It comes with 4GB that can accommodate up to 40 minutes for1080/30p, 2 hours for 720/30p, 1 hour 20 minutes for 720/60p videos. You can shoot the video for continuously 29 minutes.
The connectivity options in bloggie are limited. You will get USB port to connect to HDTV and Sony’s own multiconnector output connects to a monitor or Television and a composite cable. We really missed HDMI port on this camcorder to facilitate single cable connection for video and audio to HDTV. There are no headphone jacks or mic.
The video quality is very good for its class. We felt that colors appear to be bit oversaturated, the videos taken at full HD 1080/30p resolution is very nice, bright and sharp. The videos taken at 720/60p mode appeared bit soft. Normally in pocket camcorders, the blocky trailing and artifacts will visible with the moving objects. Shooting in low condition will result in blurry videos, though that’s typical problem in these small devices. HD video recording keep up its promise with a good fine amount of detail and sharpness when playback on large screens.
The image quality is good considering it as a camcorder, but it doesn’t replace digital camera. We find that the shutter lag is bit long, so it will not be a good choice for taking moving objects. The placement of shutter release is awkwardly placed on the right that blocks the light while capturing photo on one hand. The result is blurry image. You can use 2-second timer to avoid this problem.
Software
Sony includes two different versions of Picture browsing softwares for managing, organizing and sharing. First one is a Portable basic version( Windows
