of the latest mid-budget clamshells coming from Nokia, 3710 fold seems to be the direct successor to an older model launched at the end of 2008, the Nokia 3610 fold. Even though both handsets have the same form factor, the latest model looks much more appealing and has received some improved technical features compared with its predecessor.

Nokia 3710 fold has also been reshaped in terms of design and looks very slick and chic. Thanks to its very large keypad and the simplicity of the device, it might be one of the few good-looking mobile phones targeting impaired or older people, even though Nokia hasn't officially stated this. If you are looking for a standard clamshell at a very decent price, I guess Nokia 3710 fold can be an option. We will see below if this option is either good or bad.

Announced in June 2009, Nokia 3710 fold was made available on the market in December 2009 and can be bought for about USD200 without any subscription. Users can choose one of the three available colors: Pink, Plum and Black.

Design

Nokia 3710 fold has few things in common with its 3610 fold predecessor in terms of design. As I have already stated above, Nokia 3710 fold looks very stylish and chic, and it seems to be one of those sleek clamshells that attract users that are more interested in looks than in performance. Measuring 89 x 47 x 15.2 mm and weighing 94g (including battery), the clamshell is no larger than a standard business card, when it's not folded. Even if it's a medium-budget phone, Nokia used good-quality plastic at manufacture. The rubber-like material that covers the entire back hood of the phone and surrounds the secondary display in the front part of the phone feels very nice to the touch and helps users get a better grip of the phone.

Another positive aspect about the plastic is the fact that it doesn't attract fingerprints at all and you will have a clean phone at all times. As you can see from the pictures, the secondary display has also been covered by a protective plastic, which has a different color. On the left side of the phone, one can notice a standard microUSB port, as well as a small charging port. The right side of the clamshell features a 2.5mm jack port and a dual volume key, which can also be used to zoom in/out when using the camera. The 3.2 MP camera has been placed on the upper part of the back side of the mobile phone together with a small LED flash.

Released in December 2009, the Nokia 3710 Fold Black offers a range of useful features. Whilst it is definitely no Smartphone, it is ideal for everyday use and wont break the bank.

The 3710 Fold Black measures 89x47x15x2mm and weighs in at just 94 grams. Its light weight and relatively slim profile when opened means it is a comfortable handset to hold and use. The 2.2 inch TFT screen is capable of displaying up to 16 million colours at 240x320 pixels ensuring clear, bright images on screen. A second display is located on the front of the handset. This allows users to view info such as the time and details of incoming calls without the need to open the handset.

Users are alerted to incoming calls and messages by vibration and ringing with the option to download polyphonic ringtones as well as utilize MP3 music filed as ringtones. A useful speakerphone system is built in allowing hands free communication.

The primary means of network connection is via class 32 versions of both GPRS and EDGE, along with 3G connectivity at 384 kbps. Bluetooth version 2.1 is installed as standard whereby users can directly transfer data between compatible Bluetooth devices in the same vicinity.

The 3710 Fold Black is equipped with a camera boasting 3.2 MP which operates at a pixel resolution of 2048x1536 pixels. This includes features such as LED flash and enhanced fixed focus so quality images can be taken in all manner of lighting conditions. It also has the capability to shoot video as an alternative to taking still images.

A versatile media player supports a variety of file formats. Music files in MP3, eAAC , WAV and WMA formats are supported. The following video file formats are also catered for: MP4, WMV, H.263 and H.264. Media files can easily be transferred to and from a computer via the included micro USB (v2.0) port. Additional entertainment features include stereo FM radio with RDS and a range of pre- installed games.

Extra applications include a useful organizer, voice memo recorder and T9 predictive text input. The available range of colours of this handset consists of Pink, Purple and Black. Therefore, a colour to suit most tastes is sure to be found, especially given the growing number of users who view their mobile phones as a fashion statement.

The Nokia 3710 Fold Black may not feature Smartphone technology; however this makes it an affordable handset, adding to the appeal of the phone.
